Rig Clothes in 3ds Max The Easy Way

Rig Clothes in 3ds Max The Easy Way

Ever tried using skin or physique modifiers to rig clothes in 3ds max, and could see your character body protruding out of the clothes.your are probably going in the wrong direction as their is a much simpler way to rig clothes to models which has already been rigged with skin.

Requirements:-

  • 3ds max 2009 above.
  • Moderate skills -using 3d max.
  • A rigged character model ( with skin ).
  • Clothes for your model.
  • Time 15 min.

lets start ( Preparing the Scene ) :-

  • Open the scene which contains your rigged character.
  • Make sure you have suitable 3d clothes for your models .
a.You may design your own clothes using 3d max and zbrush or mudbox.
b.You could also download your 3d clothes for your models from any free 3d model sites.

  • Import your clothes in the scene and make necessary changes such that your 3d model completely fits into the clothes you downloaded or designed.

Lets start (Rigging clothes) :-

  • To rig clothes select your clothes model and add a skin wrap modifier to  your clothes using the modifiers list .
  • Add your character model in the parameters rollout of skin wrap.
  • Change the parameter as follows:- (works best for me)

# Deformation engine :face deformation.
# Check blend to base mesh.
# Check weight all points.
# Then click on convert to skin.

Please note- Clicking on convert to skin is for converting skin wrap modifier to a skin modifier and must be done after you have set your  desired settings.

Testing the clothes:-

  • Select any bone in your scene and rotate it.
  • Most of the times this way of rigging clothes works fair but if you are getting any unwanted distortion delete skin modifier from modifier list and change to desired parameters in skin wrap.
  • You have rigged clothes your self.
